Canyon of the Smugglers

The Canyon of the Smugglers is a narrow sea inlet on the Karaburun coast where the water pushes deep between high rock walls and ends at a small cave. Sailing in from the open sea into the still, shaded channel is one of the more dramatic moments of the day: the walls rise close on both sides, the light drops, and the water goes glassy and quiet.

What you will see

The appeal here is the rock and the water rather than a beach. On calm days the boat noses into the canyon and up to the cave at its head, with time for photos and, when conditions allow, a short swim in the cool, deep water inside. The name is the one locals use for the inlet; your guide will share the story behind it on the way in.

How to get there

The canyon is on the outer Karaburun Peninsula, inside the marine park and reachable only by boat. It is a stop on the full-day Grama Bay and Blue Cave trip, slotted in among the swimming coves and the Blue Cave.

Best time to visit

Like the rest of this exposed coast, it is best from June to September and in the calm of the morning. Entry depends on the sea: when the swell is up, the captain may admire it from the entrance rather than go inside, which is normal and worth respecting.

Good to know

There is no beach and no landing here; it is a short, scenic stop. Keep an eye on children near the deep water even with life jackets on.
