Snorkeling in Vlora: A Guide to the Clearest Water on the Coast

The water south of Vlora is some of the clearest in Albania, and the best of it is protected. The Karaburun-Sazan Marine Park, the country’s first marine national park, keeps this stretch of coast undeveloped, which is exactly why snorkeling here is so good. Here is where to go and what to expect.
Why the water is so clear
With no roads, no ports and no building along the seaward side of the Karaburun Peninsula, there is little to cloud the water. Rocky cliffs drop straight into deep sea, and beds of posidonia seagrass — a sign of a healthy Mediterranean — help keep it clean. On a calm day you can see the bottom several metres down.
The best snorkeling spots
The coves of Karaburun
The peninsula’s coves are the everyday snorkeling, with clear water over rock and seagrass at the foot of the cliffs. The half-day Haxhi Ali Cave and Karaburun tour stops at several of them.
Around the sea caves
The mouths of Haxhi Ali Cave and the Blue Cave are dramatic places to be in the water, where the light turns the sea an intense blue against the pale rock.
Sazan Island
The water around Sazan is deep and clear, a good place to float once you have explored the island. It features on the Sazan and Haxhi Ali Cave tour.
Dafina Bay
For calmer, shallower snorkeling — good for beginners and children — the sheltered Dafina Bay is the gentlest option, visited on the Dafina Bay and Secret Beaches tour.
What you’ll see
Expect clear water over rock and seagrass, small Mediterranean fish moving around the shallows, and the play of light inside the caves. This is scenic, easy snorkeling rather than a dive site — the appeal is the clarity and the setting, not big marine life.
Gear and safety
Snorkeling gear — mask, snorkel and fins — is provided free on board on most trips, so you do not need to bring your own. Life jackets in all sizes are available, and the crew points out the safe places to get in. If you have your own mask you prefer, bring it; otherwise everything is on the boat.
Tips for a good day in the water
Go on a calm morning for the clearest visibility, bring water shoes for the pebble entries, and wear reef-safe sunscreen to protect the seagrass beds. Everything you bring travels on the boat, and whatever you bring, you take home again — the marine park has no bins.
